The Underlying Disorder

There are so many mental health

conditions that are being diagnosed today. Although I recognize it can be helpful to identify the issues a person may or may not have, I believe we are overdiagnosing normal variations in human personality. I believe there is a variable that is relatively new in our world that is responsible for these diagnoses: society.

Society as we know it has created an unhealthy artificial environment for us, called it “normal” and deemed all else to be problematic. For example, kids and adults are being diagnosed with Sensory Processing Disorder, which I believe to be a natural response to an overstimulating environment. I even believe Aperger’s, Autism, Narcissistic Personality Disorder, ADD, ADHD, depression, and Bipolar disorder to be natural responses to our unhealthy environment. Those who have trouble feeling empathy are an outward expression of the very nature of our society, which harms some for the benefit of a few. Those who have trouble understanding and expressing emotions were likely raised in an emotionally unhealthy environment, by those with low emotional intelligence, which has been encouraged to be stifled for centuries. Those who teeter between highs and lows are trying to resolve conflicts, whether internal, or internal being an expression of the outward moral conflict that the society creates by existing in its current state.      Don’t get me wrong. I am not saying your condition doesn’t exist and is not valid. I am saying it has a root cause and we have the means to fix it with conscious action and love.      Even most diseases are results of the hypocrisy of our society. We could cure most, if not all if we simply resolved the existential conflicts our society presents in its current state.      Our society is a result of the choices of all those who came before us, so we most certainly have the power to redesign it to work with us all, not against it. I believe we must instill nature into “civilization” more deeply, become more emotionally aware, respond intelligently, focus on internal and societal growth (not population, but growth of character, intelligence and progress), not profit, and change any means of doing things that harms another, our planet, or life. The fact that we apathetically allow ourselves to practice these barbaric customs in the name of civilization is absurd.

The state of our world is no individual’s fault, but it is everyone alive’s responsibility to change it. Once we do, I believe we will see a drastic reduction in the perceived “problems” of what I believe to be natural variations in human behavior.
